Metamorphosis
Philadelphia
2001

This 5000-square-foot mural was designed with homeless men enrolled in a drug and alcohol recovery program at the Ridge Avenue Shelter. The design depicts the struggle of homeless men as they metamorphosize from addiction to wholeness, and the role of family, shelter staff, and the wider community in this process. The mural is the culmination of six intensive months of workshops in photography, drawing, painting, metal work, mosaic, and digital design. Residents created the metal butterflies which surround the main figure and cast dramatic shadows on the wall. Commissioned by the City of Philadelphia's Mural Arts Program.
