Carnaval
©1995 Joshua Sarantitis, Emmanuel Montoya and Precita Eyes Muralists, 15'x300', acrylic on concrete.

This 300-foot-long painting is an homage to the annual festival of Carnaval, which is celebrated throughout the world, including directly in front of this mural in San Francisco's Mission district.

The imagery is inspired by celebrations of Carnaval from Brazil to the Caribbean, including countries such as Mexico. A visual narrative describes the transformation of the spirit that takes place during the festival, through dressing up in mask and costume, and performing outside accepted social norms.

The colors and rhythm of the costumes and music of the festival are reflected in the vibrant use of paint and the bold flow of line throughout this celebratory narrative. The mural was commissioned by Pacific Gas and Electric.
